STSMs (Short-Term Scientific Missions) facilitate scientists going to an institution or laboratory in another country to foster collaboration, to learn a new technique or to take measurements using instruments and/or methods not available in their own institution/laboratory. Financial support was provided to eligible applicants to carry out a STSM that would specifically contribute to the scientific objectives of this COST Action.

Boris Delaide

University of Liège, BE
spent one week at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin (DE) setting up an experiment on anaerobic sludge mineralization exchange. Simon Goddek

spent three months at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (CH) researching the influence of different fertilization regimes on the quality and quantity of lettuce in aquaponic systems, and specifically the extent to which the nutrient demands of salad cultures in one loop aquaponic system can be fulfilled by including a mineralisation step (aerobic, anaerobic) in the fish sludge treatment. spent six weeks at the University of Rostock (DE) collaborating in a research project on aquaponic-polyculture (POLYPONIC) with Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in combination with basil (Ocimum basilicum), to test the effects of multiple fish species fish production onto plant growth. spent six weeks at Wageningen University (NL) researching bacterial relationships in decoupled aquaponics systems. She monitored the growth and vigour of plants using RAS-based water complemented with supernatant of anaerobic sludge bioreactor and inoculates of plant-growth promoting bacteria.
