Design, maintenance and risk management of aquaponics systems

Published by , 11/5/2017

The EU Aquaponics Hub ran its sixth training school on 24–28 April 2017 at LEGTPA Lozère, La Canourgue, in France. Situated in the Lozère department in southern France, the Lycée d’Enseignement Général et Technologique Agricole (LEGTPA) at La Canourgue specialises in aquaculture training. The facilities include a fish farm (30 tonnes of salmonids per year), 4m³ recirculating aquaculture system in a building adapted to aquaponics, a coupled-decoupled aquaponics unit (400m² greenhouse area and 80m² aquaculture area), a laboratory for analysing water quality, and a fish processing plant (slaughter, cleaning, filleting, and smoking).

The fourteen trainees came from Belgium, Bosnia, Croatia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, Turkey and the UK. The training school, organized by Catherine Lejolivet, provided an introduction to aquaponics systems. Consisting of a mixture of theoretical classes, practical classes and field visits, it covered the following topics: introduction to aquaponics; choice and analysis of production equipment; aquaponics system design, risk management and equipment monitoring; and monitoring and maintenance of an aquaponics unit.

Films of the lectures and practical classes will soon be available on our YouTube site.
